The illustration booklet

For the booklet, I suppose to make a 8 pages A5 booklet to explain further about the story behind yellow pencils. However, I think 8 pages and A5 format are not suitable for what I want to do. I think there are only a few people who know the reasons why most of the pencils in America are painted yellow; and I think it should be a little booklet about a bit history of pencils, which mainly for children and parents. This little booklet can be grab it for free in the pencils display corner of any book store or stationary stop, so I make a folding book which simply printed on a A4 paper.

The illustration are hand drawings by pencil.

Anyway, this is an experiment, so I printed by an ink jet printer at home only.

final poster

Yeah my A1 poster printed!!!!! I was so stupid cause I counted the wrong pencils, I thought there are 75 pencils but actually only 72 LOL Anyway, I have printed the right one!! Love the quality of the poster and the pencils are scale 1:1 as well!!!!!!!

Final Poster

I hate YELLOW!!!!!!!!!

I can’t look at the bright yellow on screen anymore!!!! I am very bad on using software and I have sit in front of the photoshop for more then 7 hours!!!!! I am going to BLIND!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I have done like more then 20 emperors pencils layouts, and I am calculating how can I put 75 pencils on the poster accurately on photoshop with the same spacing!!!!! OMG!!!! I am a math idiot!!!!!!!

P.S Why 75 pencils? Because 75% of the pencils sold in the United States are painted yellow.

I am like being crazy tonight, but I really need to print it tomorrow!

Done>>

While I am doing the line for the poster, I was thinking whether I should use black or white for the type; and start research of the logo/ brand names on the yellow pencils; and  I know the best color for the type is Blue! My poster feels very PENCIL!

Final Poster Process

I was very frustrated about my poster sketches, so I sent my sketches to Tiffany and Hussain to ask their feedbacks.

What they said the emperor’s comic idea is a bit difficult to for them to get the idea of the story of the yellow pencil.

I started researching Chinese Royalty and Emperor’s clothing patterns on the internet and see how their regal yellow presented in the past, and I realised the yellow of the yellow pencil is exactly came from the symbolic color of ancient Chinese Emperors.

So, I am thinking about the metaphor of the yellow pencil story, and trying to use the photoshop to change the yellow pencil with the drawings of the ancient emperors and their luxury dragon textile patterns.

Poster Sketches/ideas?

I think I will go for the story about American painted their pencils yellow because of the Chinese regal feelings.

Interim Crit of Color

We had a very long round up crit today, very tired but so much fun to know a lot of interesting knowledge about different color.

Although I had a lot of poster experiments, I have to focus the most interesting thing or message about yellow to present the idea in a poster and a booklet.

I think the story about Why Are Pencils Yellow is the most interesting information about yellow.

So, I decide to make a illustration book about it and a hand drawing poster!

Preparing for interim crit tomorrow

I have summarized my notes on my sketch book into 2 A3 sheets for the interim presentation tomorrow. Have printing out all the research and posters experiment as well!

I think I am choosing the right color! Yellow makes me very very happy and optimistic! =D

Also, did some research of logos in yellow too.

Yellow has the feeling of  “Moving and Unstable”, and this is very true from the branding research.

Childish?

Welcome Home

For years, yellow ribbons were worn as a sign of hope as women waited from their men to come marching home from war.

Yellow is still used to welcome home loved ones.

Summer/ Shiny

“Good Morning” represent the idea of the sun is too shiny, that we can hardly to see the “sun” when we look at the sky.
